What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is indirect tax levied on supply of goods and services. GST was introduced in India on July 01, 2017. Both central government and state government charge taxes through a single legislation.
What is GST Registration?
You register under GST and get your GSTIN (GST Identificaiton Number). GST registration refers to you getting registered with competent tax authorities. Upon registration, you can issue GST compliant invoices and other documents.
What is SGST, CGST and IGST?
Under GST regime, tax is charged and collected under different heads representing nature of transactions.
Government after collection of tax has to distribute among different states, at the point of taxation itself division is made for simplification. CGST portion goes to central government and SGST portion goes to State government.
IGST is devided based on information provided in returns.
How many days required for GST registration?
3 working days are required for GST registration. As per CGST Acts and related rules, within 3 working days application for registration should be either accepted or rejected (due to fault in documents or information). If application is not rejected, it should be considered as approved.
When should one register under GST?
One should register under GST under following circumstances.
- Turnover in a year exceeded Rs. 20 lakhs, or
- Turnover exceeded Rs. 10 lakhs in special states, or
- Your products or services are specifically mendates GST registration or,
- You are required to get registration under law.
Once the liability to register arises, it is advisable to get registered.
Different returns to be filed under GST
You have to file different tax return post enrollment.
- Monthly return for outward supplies (GSTR-1),
- Monthly return for Inward supplies (GSTR-2),
- Monthly return (GSTR-3)
If your tunover is below 1.5 crore than you need to file quarterly returns. You have to file an annual return.
If your turnover exceeds Rs. 2 crore, then you have to get your accounts audited by a Chartered Accountant or Cost Accountant.
Cost of GST Registration
Government does not levy any fee. You have to incur only professional and consultancy fee. Different consultants have different price list depending on their internal costing and expertise in this matter.
