Domicile certificate is a very important document to prove your domicile status. Domicile certificate is a government document which proves your residential status.

Domicile certificate is required for various purposes. To prove your residential status and as an address proof, domicile certificate is very important.

What is Domicile Certificate?

Domicile Certificate is a document issued by government to prove resident status of a person. Domicile certificate means a document issued by state government to prove that you are resident of that particular state.

Domicile certificate is a very important document and I suggest everyone to obtain domicile certificate while migrating to another state, as it will be required as a compulsory document for various government purposes.

What are different names of domicile certificate?

Domicile certificate is known by different names in different states. Domicile certificate meaning in Hindi is निवास प्रमाण पत्र (nivas praman patra).

Different meaning of domicile certificate in different languages are:

  1. मूल निवास प्रमाण पत्र
  2. निवास प्रमाण पत्र
  3. ನಿವಾಸ ಪ್ರಮಾಣಪತ್ರ
  4. வீட்டு சான்றிதழ்
  5. സ്വദേശ സർട്ടിഫിക്കറ്റ്
  6. বাসস্থান সার্টিফিকেট
  7. నివాస ధ్రువపత్రం
  8. घरगुती प्रमाणपत्र
  9. નિવાસી પ્રમાણપત્ર
  10. ڈومیسائل سرٹیفکیٹ

Here you can check by what name it is called in your state to obtain the certificate. Local people may not understand meaning of English term.

How to obtain a domicile certificate?

Domicile certificate is normally issued by Tahasildar of local Tahsil. For example I got my domicile certificate from Rajasthan with following procedure.

  1. Apply for Domicile certificate through E-Mitra.
  2. Provide documents along with application
  3. E-Mitra normally get the work done for you by paying extra,
  4. Tahasildar verifies documents and issues Domicile certificate.
  5. My domicile certificate was issued by SDM.

Documents required for getting Domicile Certificate are:

  1. Address proof such as Voter Id, Aadhaar etc.
  2. ID proof
  3. Birth certificate
  4. Character certificate or letter by local Panchayat head
  5. House tax receipt

Can you apply and have 2 or more domicile certificates?

No you cannot apply for 2 different domicile certificates. Legally at a time you can have only one domicile certificate, since it physically impossible to be resident in 2 states.

As per resident laws, it is impossible that you can become resident in 2 states at a time. You cannot have voter ID's also for different states at same time.

How many days are required to apply and obtain a Domicile Certificate?

It takes 4-5 days to obtain a domicile certificate. It is not difficult to get certificate as procedure is relatively simple and easy.

In case of town or villages, you apply to SDM and get your certificate.

In case of cities you apply to revenue officer of your area. Even SDM or Tahasildar is a revenue officer.
